This is another one of those diaries with anecdotal data, but it is very exciting!
I just got off of the phone with my technician who worked as a poll judge at a precinct in Delaware, in the Wilmington suburbs. Here's what she reports:
Turn out is extremely high, more than she has ever seen (she has done this for many elections). She's never seen this much passion. The Obama voters were out in full force.
There were normal voting problems, mostly related to poll workers not understanding the rules or voters who thought they were registered to a party (mostly related to people who registered through the DMV).
There were some voters who were turned away, but who came back later (extremely committed). One young man who had just turned 18 thought he had registered as a Democrat but showed no affiliation on the voter card. This young man went to court, got a judgement in his favor, and came back to vote in the Democratic primary. Another man came back with his 17 yo daughter, after determining that she would be able to vote in the primary because she would be 18 by November.
The most interesting part - in Delaware we have to sign a voter card. She reported that a lot of Republicans turned up to vote in the Democratic primary, but were not allowed because it is a closed primary (not realizing the rules). Most of these voters left without voting at all, choosing not to vote in the Republican primary.
She agreed with my assessment that Democrats were fired up this year. She was so excited that she called me to share.
