Shirley Sherrod is suing Andrew Breitbart for releasing a deceptively edited video of a speech she gave to local NAACP group. The video was edited so that it appeared that Sherrod discriminated against white farmers. She lost her job with USDA. When the full speech was released it proved that Sherrod was no bigot.

This morning I attended the science panel at Netroots Nation. The title of the panel was "Supporting Science, Benefiting Society." This is the 4th science panel I've attended but the message is always the same - scientists suck at communicating to the general public.

2009 presented quite a dilemma for Mike Castle. The Republican party required obedience from all its members for their policy of no to succeed, but Mike Castle needed to keep his moderate credentials for his voters in Delaware, a blue state. Mike Castle knew what he needed to do though, he needed to practice political Castling. In chess, castling is a defensive move where the King and the Rook change places to protect the King. Castle decided to vote no to saving our economy, along with almost all of his party, but wanted to get credit for money that comes to his district. Thus Castling was born - the Republican "trash and grab" strategy. Trash the stimulus and take credit for the benefits of the stimulus in his home district. Or, as liberalgeek described yesterday:

Isn’t "Castling" a move in chess that changes positions in a way that covers your ass?

Yes, yes it is.

Political Castling: a defensive move in politics, perfected by Mike Castle, where the politician switches positions, depending on the audience and what is popular at the time.

Delaware Representative Mike Castle will announce a Senate run today according to Politico. Castle has called a press conference for noon today to make his announcement.

Rep. Mike Castle (R-Del.) will be running for Vice President Joe Biden’s old Senate seat in Delaware, according to a source connected to the congressman, instantly giving Republicans the opportunity to flip a traditionally-Democratic seat in their column.

Castle will be making a formal announcement at noon in his hometown of Wilmington. Castle had been debating whether to run for higher office, or retire after serving nine terms in the House.

According to the new rules that the Republicans made, any connection to discredited conspiracy theories means that one is not fit for government service. So, how does the RNC justify its connections to both World Net Daily, the main pushers of the birther conspiracies, and Newsmax, who publishes a weekly column by John L. Perry? (John L. Perry wrote the column calling for a bloodless military coup against President Obama, see here and here.)

I generally consider myself an optimist (a cynical, realistic, pragmatic optimist) but there is one subject that I'm a pessimist about. That subject is the environment. I'm not sure which of the multiple environmental disasters is going to strike first and I'm pessimistic about our ability to address them before it's too late, if it's not too late already. Will it be peak oil, peak coal or peak metals? Will it be collapse of the fisheries? How about rainforest deforestation? What about plain old global warming? I think it's a race to see which environmental disaster will strike first.

Yesterday, Delaware Rep. Mike Castle held a health care reform townhall in Newark, Delaware. He gave a 24-hour notice for the meeting.

Delaware Dem and I attended Mike Castle's townhall yesterday. You can read this thread for a play-by-play of what happened.

My impression is that Castle delivered two opposing messages: the need for reform and slow down what's the hurry. The eyebrow raising moment of the night is when Castle said in his opening that he thought the filibuster rule was un-American. Interesting.

If you were following Delaware Liberal last week, you probably know that I attended the Netroots Nation conference in Pittsburgh last week. Netroots Nation is a conference for bloggers from the left side of the blogosphere with opportunities for training, networking, self-congratulating, and, of course, partying. Here are the previous posts: Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3. This is the third Netroots Nation conference I've attended - I attended in 2006, 2007 and 2009.

The (Wilmington, Delaware) News Journal has been pretty late in the game in discussing what happened in Georgetown with Mike Castle and the birthers, but they have an article in today's paper about the incident. The thrust of the article is about the distorting effect of the YouTube age, but it does get around to debunking the birther nonsense. The article also has some interesting tidbits about the woman in the video.

The star of the show -- known as "Crazy Eileen" to callers of a Sussex County talk radio station -- has gone into seclusion, declining interviews and avoiding publicity, even as previous statements by her have emerged referring to Obama as "the antichrist" and speaking of aliens and angels.

Clearly the topic of yard signs is a topic of great passion, as evidenced by the very long thread on the front page. Reading through the thread, I learned a few things.

People are waiting a long time to get lawn signs and other materials.

People are divided on the effectiveness of lawn signs in influencing the election.

The Obama campaign doesn't think that signs win the election, people talking to people win the election.

People are getting upset and angry at not being able to get lawn signs, and being asked to pay $10 for them.

Well, one thing I remember from Obama's nomination speech - "it's not about me, it's about you." Obama wants us to be involved, his campaign is very grassroots. If there's something we think is important, we should feel empowered to do it.
